hello & howdy.
we’re just back from another delicious meal at the beach store cafe. if you visit lummi island be sure and visit. sit at the counter if possible, the cooks are entertaining.
on one of our mainland visits to bellingham, we stopped in at bison bookbinding & letterpress . another excellent place to visit as you can see from the photos above.
the more we’re here, the more we love lummi island. it is enchanting. you’ve gotta stay for at least a few nights to absorb the place. there is much to be absorbed in the way of landscape, people, history, wildflowers, forests, water, wildlife. we’re so so glad we made this choice. it’s not really the place to stay to explore the puget sound and environs as it’s so far north, but this area is rich and lovely. and having said that we are heading back to deception pass state park tomorrow for a ramble.
i’m interested in exploring the san juan islands (lummi is not one of them) and just more of the PNW in general. i am down with this summer climate. boy am i ever! i can easily envision a month or 2 up here in summer to escape the LA heat.
i feel like i’ve just discovered a while new territory previously unknown to me. so looking forward to returning. mt. baker has me under her spell. as i type this i’m looking out the window into the darkening night. there she is glimmering just above the hale passage. our great white watcher, as one of you mentioned.
goodnight friends.

Would love to know how you located your little dream cottage. I so enjoy hearing of all your little and big adventures and the beautiful snaps of your own garden, especially when we are wrapped in all our winter rains.

I could leave today – you have sold me! It’s definitely become a a goal! Thank you for sharing your trip and introducing me to somewhere new. Got to visit Victoria years ago and note it’s south of Lummi Island. Beautiful part of the world.

I always thought of Mt Baker as Mister Baker. That mountain was behind my move to Bellingham oh those many years ago. Then I met a man and moved to Michigan for 10 years. I got homesick for my PNW and when n I asked that sweet man if we could move, he said yes. Now I’m in southwest Washington along the Columbia River. My new mountain is St Helens.
If you have time for a ramble, WWU has a lot of wonderful outdoor sculpture.

More glorious photos! I am so in love with the hollyhocks alongside the road in POSTCARD 3. And the sunsets! I agree that next time you come you could maybe come farther south. Think you would love Whidbey island and also Vashon which is farther south, and as someone else said, an artists and farming community. Charming place. I know a wonderful artist who lives on Whidbey Island. His wife has worked with my husband for 30 years. Unfortunately he is in very poor health, and we have been worried about losing him. I tried to find his website, but apparently he has not kept it active due to illness. Here is an example of his art. http://www.jnelsonstudio.com He still has paintings in four or five galleries around the western US. There is quite an artists community on Whidbey too.
Sounds like your stay has been full of both adventure and peaceful repose. I howled at the story of Carol crawling through the window. What a picture! You two are saucy little things. I agree with whomever said you should do a painting of that😄 Isn’t this weather AHHHMAZING? I personally wouldn’t mind a day of rain to break things up, but still…cannot complain. Hoping you continue to enjoy the charms of the PMW.

Just catching up on your postcards. What a lovely vacation you two are having. I love the green rock with barnacles in yesterday’s postcard. The Write More Letters Club, what a wonderful idea. Did you write one? In your photos Mt. Baker looks like it’s painted in….how magical is that.

so……deception state park…..gets you close to Whidbey Island. back 1956 my parents married in February and then were assigned to live on Whidbey Island (Navy base)…..I was due 9 months and one day after their wedding day. luckily I was 3 weeks late, an early December baby…and my brother arrived in November, 1957.
those young folks in the Navy called the park…..CONCEPTION State Park. It is beautiful….was able to visit the Park & Whidbey the year I turned 40…..I would love to return for a summer vacation

I’m so happy you two are enjoying the summer days that we have here west of the Cascades and in the Sound area. As I think I’ve said before, our summers are THE BEST! Worth waiting through the gray winter. You have Mt. Baker to look at up on your end; around our block here is majestic Mt. Rainier. Next time, consider the San Juans for a lengthy stay…Lopez Island (also north, but not as far) is quiet and beautiful, Whidbey and Bainbridge Islands have more to see and still offer areas of solitude, and Vashon is where the artists live! I’ve never been to Lummi, but you have convinced me I must go! As always, enjoying your photos and recommendations. Hope to see your journal pages of the trip someday soon.

thanks for the tips! must investigate lopez island. your summers are simply fantastic!

I expect you will quite like Deception Pass and I hope you don’t run into a lot of traffic. It’s been bad this summer. Enjoy your time on the north end of “my” island.
