the days on lummi island drift by in a blue haze. it is quiet here.
we walked in a field of lavender
made garlands out of buttercups
bought some brown sugar shortbread & raspberries at the island farmer’s market
picked our way down mossy paths, past berry batches
found a letterpress shop in bellingham
drove to birch bay
and glen echo botanical gardens
were serenaded by a nice man with a panflute
watched a pretty doe raise up on her hind legs and pull plums out of the trees in front of the cottage.
found the island library picked up a few $1 books at the sale
being from the great plains, sister likes to go check the beach 20 or 30 times a day.
yesterday i locked us out of the cottage! carol scrambled up a step stool and somehow managed to get in a window i’d left open. wish you could have seen her going in head first. feet and legs kicking wildly in the air then gradually lowering into the open window. if by myself i would have just had to camp out for the night outside till help arrived. would NOT have been able to heave myself over the threshold of that window. sister to the rescue!

I love that you locked the door and then left the window open. Good for Carol, scrambling in there. What adventures you have. And those views. Jeesh. Sometimes the beauty, and the laughter, is just so over the top that it almost makes me cry.

aw thanks linda! yeah i’m on the careless side with the window , but i knew it would pay off. hah!

Wow, spectacular place. I live in Victoria, BC and recognized that Mt. Baker, glorious and have many different view points around here. You could almost touch it. Really like the photos of the Hollyhocks growing wild along the narrow island road. The beautiful place houses many artisans. I loved that wee cabin you stayed in, so peaceful looking. I thank you for sharing this post. It was refreshing. 🙂

great pictures, lots of inspiration and a fun story! It’s amusing to read your sister’s side of the stories too.
I’m back from my little Holiday by the sea in Brittany France and I’ve taken quite some souvenirs from the beach. I’m very inspired to restart the classes I took at take up drawing them.

I laughed out loud at the thought of your sister being posted through the window! My daughter is champion of the lost keys/phone/ cards. Last time she locked herself out we had to remove glass louvres from a tiny kitchen window.Me on top of ladder. Then post my 8 year old grandson through the tiny gap. Thankfully he just opened the door rather than stopping to raid the fridge first!

Hi MAM, my niece and I with our spouses have made many trips together. We usually each keep a travel journal and try to faithfully enter our day’s adventure. So when we return, we have a nice narrative of the trip from several different perspectives. One time when she was visiting me we decided to get out my journal from a trip we made to Italy in 2002. As I read the entries, we discovered so many small details we had forgotten and one particularly hilarious trip to a laundromat in Florence. As I read and the trip adventures came back to life for us, we laughed until we cried. It was so much fun and allowed us to feel the excitement and adventures of that trip all over again.
You and Sister are going to have some amazing travel adventures to relive and tickle your memory banks long into the future. The mental image of her writhing and wiggling her way into your cabin was pure joy! You two are so fortunate to have these times together and the foresight to know you need to document the things you see and do. Photos, sketches, drawings, paintings and journaling are going to be a treasure worth their weight in gold. Thank you for sharing your adventures with your loyal admirers and fans!

hi marcia. yes, how fun to get in some good belly laughs. mine were easier as i wasn’t bent in half over a window with my feet and arse in the air

OMG!!! I can just visualize Carol half in and half out the window! That is hysterical. The photos are beautiful and look so very peaceful. I imagine the two of you are having a wonderful and relaxing time together. So wonderful…

You must sketch that pose of your sister half in and half out of the window! It would make an excellent journal entry. Imagine looking at that page in 20 years.

I have two sisters, whenever we are fortunate to be together, invariably something like the window scramble ensues. We have laughed so hard
It came nea to the pee your pants time. Once we were in Toronto and had taken my Mom with us, she was using a wheelchair. We were trying
To get on an elevator and got stuck half way in and half way out. My Mom as laughing so hard she was crying, we all took turns trying to do it
“The right way” with no progress. More people got involved with more suggestions, nothing worked. Finally, we stood my Mom up, she still
laughing, unstuck the chair and finally were on our way. I did NOT turn round but am certain there were many relieved people glad to see us
disappear.

read this aloud to carol…funny!
