happy mama’s day dear mom. xo
that’s my mama in monterrey, mexico 1951
flash forward to 2017
i’m happily sewing away in my sunny little studio. listening to the birds trill in the trees. sorting through different sizes of paper scraps.
i’m also popping over to facebook every now and then to see the photos being posted of moms.
and i’m listening to elena ferrante’s 3rd book in the neapolitan quartet. so so good. i would say unputdownable. except i’m listening. so i’ll say unturnoffable.
also, intermittantly reading various articles on the political climate of 1960’s naples, perusing maps of naples, and reading articles about elena ferrante’s naples.
do spill your own can of beans and let me know what you’re doing. i was thrilled to receive an email this morn from someone who is currently staying at “my” venice apartment. and she sent me pics. oh joy!
okay. back to the sewing machine and my pile of scraps.

Heya Mary Ann! I love seeing what you’re up to! I am busy painting and printmaking, and hosting legions at our neighborhood art walk last weekend( my jewelry and prints, mark brody mosaics)- it was a success but now I am unwinding with Gouache and just signed up for Remains of the Day- yay! Posting a couple pics of the charming gouache- painted box I made for my Dr. Ph Martins watercolors on Instagram if you’d like to see. mojobrody is my Instagram handle. They’ll be on my webpage too. Xx

I can’t think of anything I would rather do this week – sewing a batch of paper scraps! What a great idea, and thanks for the inspiration.

Love the Hemingwayesque picture of the mama. Paper sewing – I have the idea lurking in the back of my cranium to do a little hand sewing on paper. We’ll see.

Loving the pic of Queen Moss – looks like she and Audrey Hepburn shared a few styling tips!
Currently on escapades in Minneapolis reminiscing and celebrating a three-for-one: My birthday, Mother’s Day and my kiddo’s college graduation. She’ll be off to NY soon – all growed up and all. “Momma Bear Proud”

Just came back from a road trip starting from L A to Waco Texas stopping at Magnolia farm home of Chip & JoAnna Gains hosts of HGTV Fixer Upper. On the way back home stopping at San Antonio’s Riverwalk and the Alamo, so much history there! Next stop visiting Tombstone, very touristy but the Birdcage theater was very cool specially the huge painted canvas of Fatima and the Fly girl performers. The last stop was in Bisbee Arizona where my father was born. I was able to look up my grandmother’s ( father’s side) 1926 registered address at the local library. It was amazing that my father lived in this tiny middle of no where copper mining town nestled in the mountains of Arizona until the age of 20.
Mary Ann Moss says
what a wonderful road trip! and so cool to find info about your grandmam at the library…i’ve heard bisbee is NEAT-O

This is our hot and dry month, so we’re swimmin’ nekkid, applying chapstick and rescuing bees out of our beer glasses. We keep a fork nearby to pull them out, and when we do, Ev shouts at it “Man UP, moron! Act like it’s Spring Break!”
I have a summer cold, so add blowing my nose and reaching for Flumil to my list of today’s activities.
We just got home from a fab trip to Mx City, Puebla and Morelia. I’m trying to read about where we were in Spanish-making VERY slow headway.
Yakked with Wardie today about one of our best teaching together years ever-she received a graduation announcement from one of the kids we had that year. Mostly I’m glad he lived to graduate-you know the kind of kid I’m talking about.
That’s about it from mi querido Mexico.

You look so much like your momma, Mary Ann! Loving the yellow thread!
Mary Ann Moss says
how are the peacocks?
Karen Goetz says
They are still alive, but getting harder to feed, as they move around, and are on other people’s property, where I cannot trespass. I am listening to the male calling very loudly for his mate as I type.

Beautiful photo of Angie. She still had that mischievous look in her eye when she was older, I think. I’ve been daydreaming lately of sewing papers again, haven’t for quite some time. Thanks for the reminder..you have such cool scraps.
Mary Ann Moss says

Such a lovely picture, your Mom and is that your Dad? They both look so cosmolitan and sophisticated. We’re visiting or there on some sort of
foreign intrigue? I prefer the later. The women were there to provide cover and the waiter was involved in some sort of espionage for some
foreign, not necessarily our own.
Do fill us in on all the stealthy details😎🕵🏼♀️💼

my mom lived in laredo texas and frequently went to mexico in those days. monterrey on her honeymoon in 1954 and many times before. the man in the photo may have been her friend’s brother or boyfriend…? my pop wasn’t yet in the picture…
