because i like you, i’m gonna warn you.
you can’t just eat one. if you go HERE you’ll see what i mean!
i started with rob carey’s sketch video of laguna beach, which is making me think a weekend down here would be lovely. i always head north, never south, but maybe i should reconsider.
some things i found interesting:
- the strange looking pencil he’s using
- the wonderful greenish/gray he’s using for the water
- the music (!)
his SICILY video is a delight. i just added him to my bloglovin’ feed. someone new to learn from!

I LOVE Rob Carey! Thanks for the video.
Also, I think the pencil is a Rotring 300 2mm lead holder. (Mine looks like that!) I got mine at Jet Pens.

The pencil is a “lead holder” and it is commonly used by architects and engineers….when you buy one, you buy the leads separately so you can get whatever hardness you want. You also need a special sharpener for this type of lead. If you go to this link on Amazon for the Staedtler LeadHolder pencil and scroll down, you can see the kind of sharpener and leads you need. When I retired, I had a half dozen of them and have worn out all but 2. I adore the ability to get really soft leads and a good sharp point. Hope this link works; if not just search on Amazon using the words I typed above.

Have to go check this out when I have more time. Just wanted to mention that another nice place down south is Del Mar. Nice cliffs with ocean view, access to beach below.

His videos are great, but check out the sketches on his blog!

I think his pencil is the kind that draftsmen use; something like this one.

Let me know – I’m in the next town south and I’ll give ya a tour!

Cheap Joe’s puts out a beautiful greenish gray…or grayish green called Costal Fog…I love mine and find I use it often! Also I found out about another mechanical pencil similar to the one Carey is using put out by Faber Castell and the lead comes in many hardnesses:

Go to Jet Pens and look up mechanical pencils. I think it might be a Stabilo.
Carey is just as detailed as Tommy Kane…my goodness, the detail these two can get in a single drawing boggles the mind. I don’t have the patience.
