i decided to practice some freeway sketching. this time from my desk. i wanted to use the same palette i would have with me in the car (for the next time i can talk someone into driving me somewhere). and i wanted to work really fast. i did not have anyone stand behind me and shake the chair to mimic the bumpiness. maybe i should have.
i started by going HERE and studying caroline johnson’s recent highway sketches, which i ran across on my bloglovin’ feed on monday. the urban sketcher blog is just fantastic and i learn so much from the sketch artists that that post there. i instantly understood what my practice studies were lacking. VALUE! i needed a wider spectrum of lights, mediums, darks.
i began by copying caroline’s car scene on the bottom right HERE. i learn a zillion times more from careful observation, practice, and reflection than from just listening to someone explain how to do something.
my copy is on the bottom right below.
then i rounded up some freeway scenes from my recent trip to the shore.
whether or not this can be duplicated in the car remains to be seen. but as with all things, practice can’t hurt.
i also went back to the rocky beach and added some pen lines over the top.
also today is a 4-day workweek. in case anyone wanted to know. want to share YOUR latest artistic or travel related blog post? do share via the Link Up below!

Well, I think I just lost my afternoon to the Urban Sketchers blog. One day I will finally get a travel watercolor set and start practicing my sketching. I love looking at everyone else’s.

I regret that I can’t get there this afternoon. But then again, I’m not sure this sister even has a back seat to her car and the tomato pie would probably not be safe.

AS always your sketches are intriguing and fantastic. You are my favorite sketcher girl and I will follow you everywhere you go, I’d be happy to shake, rattle and roll ya; so if by chance you look over your shoulder and see a rather clumsy but determined person with a set of wings zip over your head at a not so graceful clip, please don’t be alarmed, freeway flying takes getting used to especially when one’s wings have a tendency to slip off mid flight. xxooxxx

Wow and wow and wow! I LOVE your work. May I ask what kind of sketchbook this is that you’re using? My favorite art blog is yours-honest! After that, Brenda Swenson, Nina Johanssen. I thought the rocks you painted are terrific! Sending form the SF Bay Area.

I spend lots of time on Urban Sketchers. So much to look at and so many styles of sketching. The Asian artists are some of the most detail conscious artists I’ve even seen. Blows the mind.
Keep sketching, love looking at your sketchbooks. Don’t have a blog to link to, far beyond my non geekness.
