my sister and i went here this morning. and i painted in the car on the way.
um. i just draw what i see.
the vw bug only had 2 wheels.
the camper had 3 on one side, and 1 on the other.
apparently.
drawing in a bumpy car speeding down the 101 freeway at 54 miles per hour is way less easy than you think it's going to be.
here's dottie getting ready to make contact with the mighty pacific. i was right behind her in a matching hat.
don't think for a second that my 6 lanes of wobbly cars with missing wheels discouraged me from continuing to plow ahead. hellz no!
i sat at the bottom of the stairs on my cement throne. it was comfortable and there was a nice breeze.
about 37 people came by with surfboards, kayaks, a lemonade stand. paddleboards, boogie boards, kids, dogs. a quiet lady sat near me and read her book. dottie headed off down the beach to explore. my arm got sunburned.
we stopped for ice cream and shave ice on the way home and slurped our treats on a sidewalk bench in carpinteria.
i presume you did something equally fabulous on this sunday in late august somewhere else on planet earth.
friends up north near NAPA, i'm thinking of you down here in southern california. remembering past quakes and sending hopes for a safe recovery & clean-up. for those not in california, more about the quake HERE.

OMG, I thought Dottie was carrying her teddy bear at first glance! Turned out to be a towel. Much less embarrassing at a public beach.

The painting with the sea and rocks is my favorite. It is deceptively simple, yet it paints a complete picture of what you saw in my mind’s eye.
I spent my Sunday doing nothing useful, creative or helpful. I recuperated all day in my pjs from a family birthday party the day before. The heat and humidity from Saturday took all of the get up and go right out of me.

I love your humour, Mary Ann. 🙂 Wonderful pictures, joyful paintings and a charming hat. My sunday was slow and quiet, just as I like it.

I went to the New York State Fair and ate Dinosaur Barbeque, picked up a bunch of freebies, bought a beautiful blue beaded African bracelet and held hands with my husband almost the whole time! Not bad.

Well, sure we woke up at about 3:30 am and thought, “Earthquake”. Then. because we are so blase` about it all, we promptly fell BACK ASLEEP. We are about an hour south of Napa and are ok. You just never know. i keep wondering what Robin Williams would say! We’re fine here, and I hope he is, too.
Vicki Styons says
Okay I am now binging on Happy Valley and guess who I am blaming?
Kate Burroughs says
Oh yes, we were rocking and rolling in our bed at 3:20 AM 60 miles from the epicenter. My husband and I looked at each other in the dark and both said “Earthquake!” at the same time. No damage here other than needing a nap later in the day. Somehow it is not so easy to go back to sleep once you are awakened by an earthquake. Our friends in Napa had bigger messes to clean up but no structural damage and were without power and water for a day or so. Thank goodness for government regulations that require stronger built buildings. So glad not to live in a 3rd world country where there are no building regulations- you did notice no one died in the 6.0 earthquake? Glad you had some fun in the sun.
Aloha, Kate

I am just hoping that Dottie was driving…

I didn’t do anything at all. Sat in my house and begged. Did a bit of searching for what I thought was lost personal papers. Good grief, finally found them right where they were supposed to be. Sheesh! Now my heart is back to beating at normal range.
Your day looks fab and fun with sister visiting. Does Dottie play with paints? I miss the ocean SO much.
Good thoughts going out to the folks in Napa/wine country. I hope the recovery goes well for them.

Your day looked FAB and I did a low fly over with my wings strapped on. It’s been awhile since I’ve used them and it felt good to soar low over the waves, though I must admit, I was a bit out of practice. Your views by the way, are awesome. Adored all your car sketches. I didn’t hear till later that the quake was in northern CA and I was relieved that it did not affect you but still, very hard for those involved and so many vintners hit. Thinking of them.
Karin says
Oh wow, I WISH I could say I did something this fabulous! Here in Sweden summer is quickly drawing to an end, and yesterday was gray and rainy… So going to the beach was really the last thing on my mind. I spent the day cleaning and organizing – useful, but not nearly this fun!
Cynthia says
I did think of you when I heard about the quake yesterday, before realizing it was much farther north than where you reside – glad you are safe and hope everyone else is too. Loooove that painting of the water and the rocks, definitely frame worthy!! Although the vehicles with and without the appropriate number of tires makes me grin delightedly!
Maureen says
I sat on the deck in a lounge chair and read til I almost fell asleep in the not-too-hot-or-humid weather. Perfecto!
I always have a pang of envy when you talk about (how close you are to) the Pacific but then there’s an earthquake and I remember paradise has a price.
Vicki says
I did lots of fun things today some of which included lots of water and the best hamburger on the face of the planet, bar none. Yes. I said it.
My paints and brushes too the day off after I made a little birthday card this morning.
Now, you’ve got me all inspired to paint past my bedtime. Again.
Lovely pics.My VW had more wheels.
Peace.

I just got home on Thursday from up there. Possibly we sat on the same bench and slurped our ice cream. After the tacos from the liquor store across the street.
