i have been wading through my deep & shallow thoughts about the direction in which i want my 2017 to go. which road shall i drive down. which path will lead me to the richest possibilities. and i’ve come to a decision. i will take the SLOW way.
i want to rewire my brain to engage in activities that require more attention. i want to read an article in its entirety before i merrily click away driven by a mad curiosity for something i must know NOW.
i’m going to start by watching all of john berger’s WAYS OF SEEING episodes here. i started with this one and its idea of the pursuit of glamour is so relevant in 2017. so interesting. made me think of social media…
i want to read more books. i always want to read more books.
i’m tired of being driven. i want to drive myself. to make room for more.
i’ve been merciless and rash in deleting apps from my phone that don’t support my new SLOW way. how long will it last? i can’t know, but i have fierce intentions.
and on we go into a new year!
oh and this is more of my travel journal from granada. to be deposited here in bits and pieces over the next days and weeks.

Mary Ann,
Happy 2017 to you. Slow? I like the way that sounds! I am still thinking about my goals for this year, but there is one thing I can tell you about them… there won’t be a number of them. Or if there are a number, the greatest number will apply to life, not work. When I travel and read about people from other countries (and read through you about peoples from other countries) I realize that we have it all wrong. We might have the highest GNP per capita but we have the lowest EQ per capita (that’s emotional quotient). We are moving too fast, spending too much time staring at screens, using up too many resources, and not really connecting… with ourselves or with others. I realize that reading your blog is staring at a screen but I do have to say that I feel like it is also connecting. What you say, how you value your days, your friends, your colleagues, your students, just people in general demonstrates the epitome of connection to me. And always you seem to want to connect more… not so much to all the hoopla of our culture but to the depth of our culture… the good side: art, books, people with deep thoughts, beauty, goodness. Keep doing what you do Mary Ann. Instead of “You Go, Girl!” I say “You Go Slow Girl!!!” It should become a new motto for all of us… You’re color stands out so much against a background of so many gray figures…

Enjoying your journal pages, as always, especially your colorful Garden Cafe for breakfast sketch. I’m with you on living life in the slow lane. Here are my favorite quotes about that: “I want my life to be a celebration of slowness”. – Terry Tempest Williams, and May Sarton: “I feel cluttered when there is no time to analyze experience”.
Mary Ann Moss says
mmmmmm a celebration of slowness. here’s to that diana!

Re: slowing down — sounds like you’re beginning to age gracefully. Slower IS better.
Here’s a wonderful poem I reposted from a friend’s blog on Friday:
“There isn’t one right path for you or anyone else.
And there isn’t a set of timelines or milestones …
You’re allowed to backtrack.
You’re allowed to figure out what inspires you
at different stages of your life.
You’re allowed extra time when you need it.
Life is meant to be a series of zigs and zags.
It should look like a mess, but a beautiful mess.
It shows that you have changed and grown.
You’ve had your ups and downs.
You went down one path, but decided to change course…
perhaps on many occasions.
That’s how life should be.”
