this afternoon the sketch monkeys got busy in their new sketchbooks. i briefly modeled how to draw their new palettes, add some lettering, and make increasingly lighter values with their paint. naturally, i misspelled watercolers which they were quick to point out, but then several of them went on to make the same mistake.
i told them not to bother trying to avoid mistakes, because they were going to make hundreds of them and it was all going to be OKAY. as i drew my palette, i stopped along the way to point out all the “mistakes” i was making.

tomorrow we’ll make a color wheel, do some color mixing, and add some writing. i want them to reflect a bit on each page about the process by writing a few sentences. afterwards they’ll have a free page to do whatever they want. for now, my plan is to have them complete a “free” page after 2 guided practice pages. but of course, like everything i do, it’s subject to change.
the guided practice is a loose interpretation of the same sketchbookery class i teach online. 3rd grade style. to the BIG kids.
we’re using canson mixed media 9×12 sketchbooks which were kindly donated via my wishlist (not accepting donations at this time) and prang 16 color watercolor sets.
thanks again wishlist donors. i’ve done my best to get amazon thank you notes out to everyone, but if you ordered from 3rd party vendors, your gifts are anonymous and i don’t see your name. please know how much we appreciate the classroom love. xo
see you soon!
How times have changed! I received my one and only (school) paddling for correcting my 3rd grade teacher’s misspellings on the chalkboard. I was avenged, however, when her water broke suddenly in the middle of the cafeteria and it took about 5 men to lift her near-to-popping body up onto a rapidly-cleared lunch table, where she ultimately delivered her baby, with the help of EMTs. Ha!
“The fun begins” says it all! I wish you had been my third grade teacher!
How lucky these students are to have you. I volunteered doing art projects
with 2nd and 3rd graders a few years ago and found them so delightful and open
to trying anything.
Sooo cool, Miss Moss!
They are so lucky to have you!
And I know you are lucky too! ;o)
Those children don’t know how lucky they are to have the greatest teacher of all……….thanks for sharing you adventures with your students! I would love to be sitting in that classroom with them….
I wish I had a teacher like you when I was in 3rd grade. Just love seeing what these kids are doing! Art wasn’t something taught by the nuns in grade school back in the day….you’re teaching them so much more than …art. Fabulous!
Wonderful, magical and special, you and the kids, and what you are doing.
So very cool! Everyone of these look amazing and I love the fact that each is unique. Kids rock and I also believe 3rd graders are the best age.
Have fun, keep posting and sharing it all.
I’m saying “ditto” to every comment already posted. You are such a gift to these children; I suspect they are a gift right back.
Love what you are showing and teaching your students! So refreshing for young students to be told that they canʻt avoid making mistakes and it will all be OK! What a blessing you are to these children! I guarantee when they look back on their school education, you will be remembered as one of the best teachers they ever had and their favorite.
lawdalmighty I must be at the pre-K level because these chicks are good at their ‘drawin’! It really does look like fun!
What a great idea — having them begin with a sketch of their watercolors………. It’s always interesting to see what different people make of the same subject.
Thank you for sharing them with us. 🙂
Oh Miss Moss if all teachers could be like you!! What an engaged, creative generation we would have who would grow up to be the kind of leaders we need in this country. Thank you for caring about what you do and teaching your students the same.
I wish I were both in your shoes and your kids’shoes.
Wonderful!
Wonderful stuff Miss Moss.
I am thinking of teaching an after school watercolor class. Please, if you can, continue showing us what you are teaching your students. What pen are they using for the lettering and outlines? The results are amazing.
Books I have enjoyed reading are those written by Elizabeth Ironside, which are intellectual mysteries published by Felony and Mayhem. Also, Alan Bradley has just written another in his Flavia de Luce series: Thrice the Brindled Cat Hath Mew’d. These are based on scientific facts, are utterly charming, and I suppose if there weren’t a dead body involved along with accompanying descriptions, a third grader would enjoy it. Flavia is a perfect role model. I thought The Women is Cabin 10 was a bit ponderous, although the story line was intriguing.

Happy, happy, happy to see what your kiddos are doing with their sketchbooks and “watercolers.” Can’t wait to see page two and all the others that follow. What lucky students to have a teacher who gives them the space to create and explore.
They are so good! I bet they love coming to school with you as their teacher.
I sure wish I had had a teacher like you when I was that young! They are so lucky, and those paintings are so FUN! They did a marvelous job!
MAM ~ I in no way, shape or form like kids, but I think what you are showing them is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! Art can open so many doors for them…keep up the good work!!
These are A-MAZING! These kiddos are having so much fun.
I have never used this word in my life…
but WOWZA!!!!
My, My, aren’t they neat and tidy???!!! I can’t wait to see what the sketch monkeys do with their free pages. I’m sure you get endless delight watching the budding artists take flight….that’s what art is, isn”t it? A complete flight of fancy.
Seeing this makes me want to get out my watercolours and play along!
art IS fun!
Please Miss, I want so badly to be in your class.
I’ve been loving your posts and just wish I had had a teacher like you when I was that age oh well any age lol I love your classes….
Makes me happy!
Oh what a delight to my eyes.
