last week we used our sketchbooks to make a colorwheel and draw some pumpkins. this week we used them during social studies to explore totem animals used by the northwest coast indian clans. everyone chose their favorite animals and jotted down their symbolic traits. tomorrow they’ll sketch some preliminary totem poles in their sketchbooks, then they’ll make some larger drawings on long paper to hang in the classroom.
i’m so charmed by their wonky drawings. such vitality! so interesting!

Wow! What wonderful drawings! And as others have said…..”I will never forget this day” and “Art is my life” make my spirit soar. I’ve never forgotten the art teacher who planted the dream for me. I think your kiddos will remember you.

Wonderful drawings. I love how you tie drawing into other aspects of learning…it will help them to remember the lessons for sure. At what age do we lose this marvelous free thinking ….and turn to the logical? I love children’s art…it’s so free. I’m enjoying your journey with these kids!

What a great job the artist did with the pumpkins, blending the paint colors…way to go! The totem animals are very well done also. Love it that the kids are so fearless with their color choices and designs. Who knows how art will change their little lives…you’ve given them a treasure.

I so love that you’re sharing all of this fabulous art with us. It is so much fun to see how fearlessly your students approach their art. It would be wonderful if, as adults, we still had that attitude. And of course, having a cheerleader like you doesn’t hurt. Can I come to LA and be a third grader in your class???
