hello. it’s thursday. i’m painting fruit. what are you doing?
here’s the other half of the cupcake page:
i’m planning to visit all the food groups with my paint brush.
lisa told me about food rules in the comments a few posts back. i just ordered it and can’t wait for it to arrive. maira kalman has inspired scores of sketchbook keepers & illustrators in the last decade. she’s a huge reason so many have taken up gouache with a passion. myself included. naturally i had to check this book out. when it arrives i’ll share about it here.
go check out lisa’s magnificent watercolor stickers on her blog. they are just beautiful!
see you soon!

Mary Ann, loving the cupcake series, my vicarious pleasure as I rarely can overcome the guilt of a velvety chocolate cupcake. As I have said often, your recent paintings in gouache and watercolors reminds me of Maira Kalman. Rich colors, an unsophisticated look (that’s a compliment!), a whimsical and fun attitude. I have Food Rules – I have all of her books and look at them often – and I think you will love it, also. And in your visits to all of them, I pray do not forget the popcorn and pretzel food group.

I am kind of in love with the citrus. So bright and sunshiny in the middle of winter! Citrus is always so pretty in art. Today I’ll be playing with painting flowers ala Pam Garrison. I already did one on an envelope with acrylic paint pens this morning. I thought it would warp a lot because of the thin envelope but it didn’t! We are supposed to have a bit of a wind/rain storm later, so I thought some comfort food was in order, so I will make chicken and dumplings later. You are invited:). Lately, my oldest daughter and I have started carving our own stamps and it has become an addiction. Fun, easy and highly recommended! I am now going to take a gander at that wonderful book, Mary Ann. Two books in two days that I now want! I wish I had a library with loads of shelving to display these beautiful works of art. Thanks for being you, Mary Ann. You are a treasure.

Big smiles upon seeing this page coming from me and the dull grey state of Pa in winter! Gorgeous pages!
