it’s been raining here in antigua. dark skies, buckets of rain, small streams of water in the cobblestone streets.
we snuggle in the living room and build fires. yesterday i went with the housekeeper, angela to procure leña (firewood) on the outskirts of antigua. we rode in her truck over the cobbled streets and i got a wonderful tour of places i wouldn’t get to on foot. then we stopped by her house and i met her daughter, 5 dogs, and 1 cat.
after a few days of solid rain and many river (street) crossings the sun finally emerged yesterday. we went to san francisco iglesia ruinas. they are wild & lovely.
here is the arbol de fuego tree with its thick waxy blooms.
flowering trees and vines bloom abundantly on the vast grounds.
many come to ask for favors & prayers from antigua’s resident 17th century saint, santo hermano pedro de san josé de bethancourt.
i submitted a request that i continue to be free of traveler’s diarrhea. there are so many ahead of me though and i don’t know how fast pedro works.
i won’t keep you posted.
at night we’ve been drawing each other.

these are mine, along with some blind contours.
that is not a butternut squash on syd’s calf. it’s her foot.
this is elena wearing a magnificent huipil from san antonia aguas calientes.
there is no end to the adventures in which one can lose themselves here in the storied streets of antigua. syd found a wooden parade-head boyfriend that she’s been having fun with. too much fun if you ask me.
see you soon.

My boyfriend parade dancer and I hope Pedro is still smiling down on you and it all fits in the suitcase. xoxox sv

Oh my, I was way behind on email and blog posts. I just read your posts back to October 2, 2015, although backwards. What fun to read them all at once. Wonderful pictures. I read the Joyce Maynard article you have referenced. I really enjoyed your pictures and posts. Thank you!

Mam
Totally was a butternut squash !!!!
Killed me.
Then my husbands says” what’s so funny?”
I said “Mary Ann.”
That satisfied him…now that’s funny all over again.
Keep it up!

Enchanting all!!!!!!! and your sketches have me smiling so much. Love all those candles lit and the fire, oh so very cozy. I’m doing a low fly by, I can’t resist the pull any longer, my wings are secured and I am hoping I don’t crash among the cobblestones. 😉

Oh Santo Hermano Pedro de San José de Bethancourt hear our prayer that our sister Mary Ann shall continue to bless us with her wayward, I mean wayfaring adventures unhindered by el turista. Amen.

Wonderful trip!!! Wish I was there with you, especially in the gorgeous living room with the fire and the Mercado de Artisanos. (hope I spelled it right) The TEXTILES are GLORIOUS!!! Get as many as you can or you will deeply regret it. I went on a toot at the handicraft market in Guatemala on our cruise and still wish I’d bought more, especially the embroideries. Love your posts, and seeing things through your eyes!! Thanks!

While it’s been raining, I’m glad you have good friends to be with by the fire, laughing, eating and sketching (okay, some of those last sketches made me bust out laughing!).

Are you anywhere near Cafe Condessa? My teacher, Jane Swezey, (that I mentioned in my blog) owns this cafe. It’s on the main square and delightful. Nice photographs as usual.
