mary & syd are winging their way back to the land of california. they left in the middle of the night and headed to the airport in guatemala city.
here’s mary in her room last night packing. we spent a glorious week together and the best part is they’re only a couple of hours away from LA for future rendezvous. tonight’s fire in the living room won’t be the same without them. in the coming days i’ll be sharing more of their sketches with you. in the meantime you can find them on instagram where they’ve been much better about posting than i.
yesterday, their last day in antigua, was spent wandering antigua’s sun-drenched streets. warm sun, cool air, green mountains, hide-n-seek volcanoes, flotillas of clouds. all of that guatemalan charm on display in spades.
today i hit the streets alone, stopping to sketch in the sun and shade. went for lunch at my favorite place, sabe rico, and read my book. came home took a nap. yep. i am a super ambitious traveler.
i MAY have picked up a couple of treats for later. maybe.
here are some of the gorgeous textiles i saw…and yes, i am bringing home a few things.
including a new fabric door for the bathroom. those of you familiar with moss cottage will know just what i mean by that!
syd & mary!!! look at the giant frozen jamaica i mistakenly ordered at sabe rico. DEE LISH US.
blowing kisses from guatemala. see you soon.
p.s. have you started planning your trip to guatemala yet?

Those textiles are luscious! Looking forward to seeing your picks.

Wowie. I looks like one of those trips where you just pack your underoos and journal so you can fill your bags with fabrics to take home. It looks amazing.

Wowza, those textiles are gorgeous and then some. I’d be hard pressed to settle on 1 or 2. It’s probably just as well I’m not tagging along side of you. I’d break my check book I think. 😉 You’ve been so so generous sharing all these photos and ponderings, I feel like I’ve seen the best of Guatemala and seeing it through your eyes and thoughts is the bestest possible way to do it. I am enraptured by the colors and the architecture and well just everything…I’m thoroughly enjoying this journey.

those textiles…wowza

We did have the most amazing time!! So grateful to sweet MA …she made it so much more fun…We did not even put a dent in the supply of amazing textiles. Antigua was so beautiful and filled with warm friendly people. I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable….totally awesome adventure. Go if you get the chance….Thank you Mary Ann!!

WOW! This world is so rich in diversity! If we thought of countries as women you are in the blowsy Guatamalan woman world and I’m in the frugal puritan Iceland. Stark, spare demanding – still beautiful. Diverse as the women who inhabit them. Both seem to have strong – almost tough – women carving their countries to accomodate their art. So far it looks like Guatamala gets colorful fabric and Iceland gets aromatic hot foods…we shall see what is next!

Wonderful post of our last day in beautiful Antigua! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Wonderful Mary Ann!!!… for sharing your hacienda with us!!! I think my favorite part was the joyous laughter we shared when we all looked at our contour drawings of each other! Of course, shopping for huipils, yummy meals, and volcano watching are right up there as well.
And where was that Frozen Jamaica when I needed it??? Much love and gratefullness, Ms. MAM!!! Henry says Hi!

So green and blue and red with color envy. Those are some delicious fabrics. Glad you are having a great time and survived the volcano. Need some gato pics…..are they as colorful as the textiles?

nary a kitten or grown-up cat to be seen. as this is a town of walled houses leading into courtyards not many places for a kitty to go…i did meet ONE, but don’t have his pic.

PHWEEEE! Lookit all that color!!! Okay, so my order is: The one with the strawberry, (how cute is that?) the bright pink with the birds, the lavender with the flowers, and the one with the single bird. That is all:). Kidding! But those are the ones I would have bought. Love the shot of Mary in her room. I see she’s putting many colorful things in her suitcase! Also love just seeing the room itself. Very cozy! Must have been hard for them to leave, and you to let them go. Glad you all had a wonderful time! Continue…

yikes, how can you even decide which textile to purchase? The embroidery makes me swoon….those women are so productive. Sounds like a wonderful country to visit. Holly

I would think I had died and gone to heaven with all those beautiful textiles–I hope you brought an extra large empty suitcase with you

Oh Mary Ann! Thank you for the textile pictures. I am collecting colour combinations at the moment for a painting project and these are right up my street. You have made me want to leave the comfort of Europe and launch myself across the Atlantic to see this beautiful country! Thanks as always for your inspiring posts and adventurous travels. My favourite blog!

Had to get an extra towel for the excess droooooling. I’m sure I would be ‘out of controll’, or ‘doubleOC’ as I refer to it. Beautiful photos. hugs, Donna

Textiles to die for!! I’m wondering what drink you INTENDED to order! 😉 BTW, I got my ReliefBand! I have to say, it’s somewhat shocking for my apparently sensitive wrist, but I think I’ll get used to it, and I’m going to try it airborne soon! Thanks for the reference!

just keep it on 1 or 2, very mild. I start on 3 and go up from there depending on curviness of roads. hope it works for you. it’s been a lifesaver for moi.

Wow, wow and double-triple wow! So wonderful to peer at the textiles, figuring out the weaves or embroidery. So great to step back and just see them as colors. Satisfying to recognize some of them as similar to some in my own collection.

So my nagging paid off, eh?! 😉
