the painting is halfway complete. that brown window trim will be white tomorrow, not bird of paradise pink. i love the sundried tomato trim. the old trim was the putty brown you see above on the window. ick.
which one of you want to come and plant a trailing fragrant herb in my kitchen window box?
my 2 travel palettes with the names of paint written underneath. mostly daniel smiths with some winsor newton and a couple of holbein.
some of the colors look almost the same, but they make different mixes. i love the swipe of paint across the cold press paper. mmmmmmm.
i don’t have a black but i can make some dreamy darks.
the swatches below are tints – paint mixed with titanium white. that’s why i have it in my palette, for times when i want to have a bit of gouache-like paint.
utterly delicious.
i made this car sketch today. apparently, i don’t know what the date is when i’m on the lam. this little journal that i use for mostly live sketching is my inspirtation for my guatemala travel journal. i love these quick studies i do in the car. maybe i can hire a tuk-tuk driver in antigua to cart me around and tuk-tuk sketch. hmmmmmm….. it’s an idea worth exploring.

The sun dried tomato color os perfect. Wish I could tuk-tuk myself into your suitcase and go along to S.A. Your paints are so luscious. I like to mix dark colors also. Black tends to be flat.
May the wind be at your back! Happy journey.

If only I weren’t 3,000 miles away, I would show up with a lovely rosemary plant for your kitchen window box. . . to cook with, to smell, to look at and to paint! Love the colors you’ve chosen – can’t wait to see the finished cottage!

I actually like the bird of paradise next to the sundried tomato! But the bird of paradise will look lovely on your garage door. All your paint swatches must have been so fun to swipe on that paper. Lovely car sketch..holey smokes, you are getting so good with that travel palette.

That reddish color looks nice and crisp against the white, Mary Ann. Kinda sad you couldn’t use the bird of paradise. Sniff! Love all of the watercolor swatches! MMMM! Really love the row of plum colors. Do you plan certain colors based upon where you are going? For instance, Sweden, as opposed to the much brighter colored South America? Just wondered.

oh but i will use the bird of paradise! right out back on my patio where it will GLOW. i’m changing the color of my purple garage door to pink! should be done tomorrow and i’ll post a photo.
that’s a good idea re: the colors for locations, but i just go with what i can get the best mixes from. colors that i find pleasing. i do think i have some warms & brights for guatemala. mmmmmmm

So happy to hear you will use bird of paradise, and can’t wait to see! Hey, on your watercolor swatches I was wondering who makes the Q-Coral color? I assume the “q” stands for quinocodrine (sp)? That is a wonderful color and me again with the coral love! I can’t get enough of it lately. I also love opera rose. It looks like you have quite a variety in your palette so you will be able to mix anything you need. I like the idea of making gauche just by adding titanium white. Clever!

that quin coral is one of my FAVORITES of all time. it’s a daniel smith. all of their quins are so lovely!

Thanks so much Mary Ann. Gotta get me some of that! I haven’t tried Daniel Smith yet. I have a Windsor Newton travel set. Kind of limited, but forces me to learn my mixing. I need to branch out a bit!

I would totally recommend nasturtium and sweet peas in your kitchen box…they can go in salads…they are fragrant when a breeze wafts in and ridiculously wanton with the blossoms…

What a wonderful old jade plant you have!!!
