sister & i arrived last evening after a 12-hour meander up the highways & byways from los angeles. now we’re tucked in here for a week on this cool foggy coast. today is sunny, but who knows what tomorrow will bring? we can’t wait to find out.
for now… we’re heading out to explore. this morning we put on our crazy morning Bluff Sitting Outfits and strode out with our steaming mugs of coffee. destination: our bench on the headlands overlooking the mighty pacific.
point arena lighthouse winks at us throughout the night. the milky way is a streak of white in the inky sky. fog rolls in and rolls out. the air is crisp, damp, salty. even if blindfolded with earplugs you’d know you were by the sea. even if you’d never been to the coast, every atom in your body would be stirred by the memory of the scent of Ocean. it’s in our DNA.
onward & upward!

Of all the amazing, spectacular, and cool traveling that you do, what I am really jealous of is that very first picture: the table set up with companion palettes and water bowls and journals. I rarely have that experience with anyone and LOVE seeing you and your sis hanging out whether in person or facetiming!

Totally agree about the ocean in our DNA. We’ve all had 9 months of that sound rocking us in safety. DH and I had planned to drive to the coast while in Napa but the November days were too short & foggy for us to get back in the daylight. Maybe an addition to a San Francisco trip one year….earlier in the year too!

All I can do is gasp at the beauty of the coast, can imagine the smell of the ocean and hear the crashing of the waves. I love rugged coastline! The Hiway One trip is one of my favorites! I grew up in San Diego and Oceanside/Carlsbad coastal towns. I lived 10 minutes from the beach where I spent most of my spring and summer days when in High School, college. Miss the ocean and the smell of salty air terribly. I live in the intermountain West, the high desert. A long way from the ocean and all those fond memories. The digs look fabulous. Can’t wait to see more.

You skedaddled out of So Cal at the right time. We almost had to launch the ark with all the rain today. Love the Mendocino area. Drove through it once on a 4 day road trip, made it all the way to Eureka. Watch out for the bud farmers though, they can be a bit territorial. Is that Carol in her nighty? Love the polka dot old lady bench cover. Classic. Can’t wait to see your contour sketches of the ocean;)

Sigh…How I miss the sea. It has been years since I have been able to go to my favorite ocean getaway in Cannon Beach Oregon…Heaven on earth to me. It is a little beach town/-artist community in Northern Oregon. Look it up if you get a chance…it is gorgeous, and the mountains come right up to the sea. Haystack Rock and the tidal pools around it, and Ecola State Park (where The Goonies was filmed, as well as in nearby Astoria). Lewis and Clark came to the end of the trail there, and the wet weather nearly defeated them. From Ecola Point you are way above the ocean and can see forever. The Tillamook Lighthouse is just offshore there and is said to be haunted by someone who died building the lighthouse. It was a mausoleum (sp) when the lighthouse went out if service. From the lookout you can watch sea lions on the rocks below, and sometimes you can see gray whales passing by. It is an artists paradise, I tell you! Not to mention two of the best pizza places ever! Sorry, I got carried away…
Looking at your photos I can almost smell the ocean air and hear the crashing of the waves. My favorite photo is the art table with a view of the ocean. Atmospheric…
Have a beautiful and creative time with your sis, Mary Ann!

Love, love, love the photos…it’s really breezy here today so I am simply imagining the sounds and scents of the ocean. Pretending I’m just right about there. 🙂 A 12 hour drive sounds lovely and brings back so many sweet memories of California cruzin’ . I’m gonna be camped out here so just know I’m looking forward to every peeky peek you take time to share. Enjoy every single moment. I know ya will and give Carol a hug for me, just cuz..and oh here’s one for you too…just cuz 😉

Ah, Mary Ann, you are in a good place. I sent you details on Hiway 1 from Bodega Bay north, but sent it to the wrong place. (Ah, me). Sonoma County coast is rugged, but not as much as where you are. Enjoy!

Lucky girls. Oh to be there sniffing the salt air and listening to the roar of the ocean. Instead I am listening to a bleating (I think that’s what you would call it) elk baby looking for its momma. Hope she comes back soon as the little guy is wearing down. I digress. Enjoy and send more pictures and wonderful words. 🙂
