monteliusvägen is a walking path perched on the forested cliffs north of mariatorget. i mentioned it in my last dispatch. i found it last week before i had any inkling of an idea i’d be staying in stockholm another week in an apartment right around the corner from said walking path. but it’s worthwhile to note that on that occasion i did wonder what it would be like to stay in this neighborhood on a future visit to stockholm.
i’m not even telling you how to get here. not really…just head north past hornsgatan from the pretty little square i just mentioned, start climbing, and sooner or later you’ll run into it. it’s fun to discover it rather than try and find it with a set of directions. it’s the way i found it and it’s the way i want you to see it for the first time.
i’ve visited a few times now that my apartment is so close. under clouds, in rain, and sun. they’re all good.
if it’s sunny you’ll see people picnicking on the various benches and stairs. and if it’s drizzing you might not see anyone, which is really nice.
as you walk across the wooden planks of the walkway, different versions of old stockholm come into view. each one is splendid. at times it feels as though you’re in a forested wonderland of dirt paths and rambling roses. at other times like you’re in 18th century stockholm. the views across the water of riddarfjärden and onto the black rooftops of the old city are storybook worthy.
walk the entire length from west to east. then just follow your nose down the cobbled streets and see where they take you.
it’s saturday night and i’m tucked into my cozy apartment getting ready to snuggle up with a jo nesbo i found in the apartment.
occasionally i wander to the window to see what the neighbors are doing…
on this rainy night in stockholm.
this morning while i puttered in the kitchen, i saw a neighbor lady looking through a cookbook. another tended her balcony garden in her nightgown.
i wanted to wave and blow them kisses, but i didn’t want to scare anyone.
you aren’t going to believe what happened next!
no really. you won’t.
i found 2 mice in the apartment!
aren’t they cute?!
goodnight from stockholm. blowing kisses into the scandinavian night. stick your hand out, see if you can catch one…

We are going to Stockholm this summer. Only for 3 days on our way to Gotland, but we will definitively go and find Monteliusvägen! Sit on the benches, enjoying the views! Thank you so much for taking us there, without you we probably would miss this place!

I love your posts from Sweden so very much!! My maternal great grandparents were Swedish and I long to find out about them and all things Swedish, so I just grin from ear to ear each time you post one. I’m armchair traveling with you, loving every moment. xo

Lovely mouse friends, but I woke up with the traumatic anxiety about the travel journal needing more days! What to do, what to do…. Wonderful dilemma to outstay your journal…. xox

Howdy, MAM! As usual, you tickle our senses with your photos and the spot on descriptions that describe the views and scenery along your stroll. Like Maureen commented…I was thinking of my bum knees looking at those steep streets and pathways. The left one is scheduled to be replaced on August 11th so I had to use a healthy dose of imagination to see myself ambling down the streets. Luckily for those of us with bad knees, you are up to the task!
Your mice were a pleasant surprise and appeared to be harmless! I had envisioned two mice coming out during the night looking for crumbs you might have left for them to find! A friend of mine knew some one who had a bowl of chocolate kisses that kept being raided nightly by a tiny mouse. She made peace with it and,in fact, NAMED it Hersey. So he got quite bold and would come out, look her right in the eye, take a kiss and sit there peeling back the foil! I think you have no worries that your two mice will grow to be so daring! Ta ta and keep those postcards coming from Sweden. You have whet out appetite for MORE!

What a contrast..Jo Nesbo (who I love…) and the twee little mice! I must say those cobbled streets are daunting and make me think I’d end up with #2 knee wanting to be replaced. but the views. o m g. Hopefully there is a bakery at the top as a reward for those who make that climb. 🙂

I’m grinning from ear to ear, you a such a good story teller Mary Ann 😉 as I read I knew that somewhere there was going to be the ‘rest of the story’ moment but I never thought it would be a couple of adorable critters tucked into their little bed boxes for a nap. Your street rambles and roamings are so very inviting…I’m going into daydream mode…I thinks. 😉

Coming back for a second read this morning. That scene of out the window of nighttime Stockholm – Raymond Chandler.

Another lovely stroll. I might have had a hard time on those steep inclined cobblestones. Glad the little mousies turned out to be so cute!

Heavenly photos of a captivating old city. I love cities with a long history, old buildings still in use, modern yet with a sense of the old and valued sections. And who would expect a cliff side path with all those fabulous views??? Perfection.
The little mice are adorable with their hand knit blankets. I was hoping you didn’t find real live ones in your new digs. They don’t scare me, but I don’t like to encounter them where I live and eat.
I’m not seeing food pix, I’m sure you’re finding some great goodies to savor.

Ok, I have to admit, the mention of mice had me squirming in my seat, but they are so adorable. As usual, you have provided some of the most beautiful photos of your explorations. Thanks so much.
