More window stories! Yes. DFLA has officially become a blog about windows.
This weekend in Palm Springs it will once again become a blog devoted to sketchbookery & tomfoolery.
Hold onto your shorts until then.
4 days in and the final cleanup is happening. The 3-man crew has been exceptionally good natured & polite. One of them whistles while he works. True story.
If you're in Highland Park and need windows from an established business with a good reputation I could not recommend Tom's Glass highly enough. It's owned (since 1979) and operated by 2 brothers Rudy & Kenny. That's Kenny on the right. That's not Rudy on the left.
Old leaking patio door was also replaced.
When I arrived home the crew was meticulously cleaning every window, latch, and frame. I was impressed at their diligence.
I'm so charmed by the awning windows. The security they provide was an added draw.
Don't get me wrong I still have my trusty hammer and baseball bat in the bedroom for emergencies and I'm not afraid to use them, but these windows are about 550% more difficult to break into.
The snowy white treatment the walls are getting in the next month will be the crowning touch. These poor walls are smiling just thinking of it.
No I will NOT be doing the job myself. No time for that! I've got books to read, cats to pet, and pictures to paint in my sketchbooks. Also. Layzeeeee.
Here is the last remaining original window in Moss Cottage. It's looking forward to its makeover.
The crew will make one final pass-through in a week after everything has settled. Just to make sure everything is working properly. I do appreciate conscientious workers.
Kenny has a soft spot for bachelor cats living on the streets. He has a couple that rent out rooms at his shop. I've always found affinity to cats to be a good barometer of outstanding customer service.
Over and out pilgrims! Soon I'll be sending you dispatches from Palm Springs.
Talk amongst yourselves till then.

I like, like, likkkkkkke your windows. I love the fact that some of them open from the top. It’s nice to know that someone else has a baseball bat. The Husband doesn’t know it, but I’ve got baseball bats conveniently hidden around the house. I should tell him where.

Oh how much do I wish these guys would come to Maui! All the really good guys only work on the million dollar homes on the touristy parts of the islands, so us poor folks in the jungle just drool when we read blogs like yours telling great stories about honest help, why is that such a lost art these days? Your home looks beautiful and let the guys know if they ever do a working vacation in the islands, there is plenty work! Aloha, angi in hana

I enjoyed a look at your patio. Don’t blame you at all for all the window talk. It’s good to see you enjoying the new windows, especially since the old ones probably didn’t work well. Kenny endeared himself taking care of the bachelor cats. What a good man.

And doesn’t Kenny have great eyes?!

Mary Ann, I can relate to your not wanting to paint your walls yourself. I use to paint mine but now the thought of it just makes me want to crawl under someone’s big cat and dream of spring and sunshine.

They look fabulous!
Please let me know if the new windows help with the dust. I live in an old house too and I dust every day… EVERY DAY!
Since they’re local, I’ll call them. Thanks for the referral.

Super fab upgrades to Moss Cottage, Mam! Nicely done! w00t!
Suggestion: You may wish to consider painting the interior walls with a warm soft pearly bisque color and leaving the windows and their trims the pure crisp white. I live in a wonderfully paint-chosen (not by me) 100 year old Craftsman apartment that has that and it looks Cottage-tastic! The tonal contrast isn’t stark between the two shades of paleness but boy the charm factor is through the roof, you should pardon the expression.
Example of color combo although mine is more red than as yellow as this. Hard to find one like mine online but you may see what I mean with this:: http://www.kitchendecorationsideas.com/white-kitchen-designs/small-white-kitchens-designs/#image-1

So happy that you were able to find a good company to replace your windows. Nothing like being satisfied with the new windows and the workers who put them in. Looking forward to the posts from Palm Springs. I am enjoying adding to my sketchbook here in Hawaii.
Aloha, Kate

The quality of your new windows and the workmanship of the crew shines through Mary Ann. They look divine and I know I’ll sleep better knowing how much more secure you will be within the cozy containment of Moss cottage with superior windows 😉 Moss Cottage seriously has to be the best place on your hill and I am pretty sure all of the other houses and cottages are wishin’ they could show off some shiny, new ‘bling’ too. Mighty fine indeed!!! 😉

I am loving those awning windows!! And the views out of them, to your lovely patio and all those succulents. Oh, the joys of living in California. Looking forward to art news from Palm Springs.

I’m so impressed that you can make even changing windows out so interesting! Beautiful!

How exciting! And satisfying! They look GREAT!!!! (And better safety is good. I’m sure Mama Moss approves. 🙂 )
We have a brand new (as of yesterday) kitchen faucet that doesn’t drip. 🙂
Progress is Good. (lol…………)

maureen,
it’s work i could’ve and should’ve done YEARS ago, but due to my hatred of finding people then tolerating them in my house i kept putting off.
thankfully i forced myself to just take care of it. now if i can just muster the fortitude to get the interior painted. i’ll be so pleased with myself!

The windows make it all so beautiful. I am jealous you can look outside and see so much green. That makes it worth putting in some beautiful new windows and that super cool awning. Enjoy your views!

I remember when lived in in an old house and all the windows were painted shut after years of repainting and we replaced the windows and oh the joy of being able to open windows and not having to use a stick to hold them open!! So I have throughly enjoyed and understood your enthusiasm for new windows!!
Judy H. says
Love it all. 🙂

Awning windows are wonderful for days when it rains and you still want fresh air. We have them in our bathrooms.
You have really done a lot of renovation work recently, haven’t you. 🙂

It is so wonderful with new windows. My little house from 1863 changed completely when it got new white oldfashion windows some years ago. Enjoy Palm Springs.

Ooh, diligent, cat loving, workmen and eye candy to boot. You has died and gone to heaven!

Windows look great, but I’m in awe of the greenery bloomin’ around Moss cottage. Sure would like some of that here in icy western PA. Looking forward to your Palm Springs reports.

Great job done! Love it when there is a good small local business to do the work! I am sure Moss Cottage is basking in the sun with all that new finery!
