the windows are only halfway done, but i've already rolled and unrolled every single one about 120 times each in the last 2 days.
it's raining! let's see how the awning windows do in the rain!
oooh look how wide the casements open!
it's sunny! let's try again!
unroll. run outside. see what they look like open. see what they look like closed.

2 more days of installation coming. trim installed, frames reattached.
much less chaos than i imagined.
next up: fresh paint inside & out. white walls & whiter trim
eventually i'll stop blogging about windows.
but i can't say when that will be.
apologies.

Too funny! I just ran into my neighbor (we both follow your every word!) at the grocery store, and we were chatting and laughing about your new windows and how excited you are. Isn’t it nice to know that your fans are not just fascinated by your creativity but also the literal way you look at the world?
Kristi Shreenan says
I’d do the same…if the snow weren’t more than half way up the windows!
Enjoy!

Ah, windows! All ours were painted shut when we moved in our old house (built in 1923). We have finally gotten three open, and have new ones in the pantry and laundry area. The new ones open like a dream and I love them. Historic area regs forbid new ones in the front of the house though. Well, regs and my DH’s desire to keep the old ones and rebuild them. Crazy man.

We recently got new windows in our bedroom and laundry room. Seems crazy to be excited about something so mundane but it is awesome isn’t it?!!

I’d never seen awning windows. I like the ‘open in the rain’ feature.
Are you having painters paint your interior or will you do that yourself (shudder). I am discovering that DIY is nice for CERTAIN tasks, others, not so much, if affordable. It all feels like rebirth and what a nice time to do it. I need carpeting but the thought of the messes is daunting.

i know the feeling…loved mine when i got them. its amazing how the ability to open a window without a process can make me so happy. and the clarity when their closed…ahhhh.

New windows are a nine day wonder, aren’t they? Love that top part that slants up, excellent feature. Think I need to start lobbying for those. Enjoy!

We finally got good new windows for our 1910 house. While not casement, just being able to easily open, close and lock was amazing. And no more drafts! or windows propped up with a stick.
Now, a few years down the road, I’m planning a full window-washer wash for them in about a month or so. Finding a window washer is like looking for a blacksmith or a farrier and my ladder days are over.

Congrats on the new view! Or, at least, a new look at the existing view. 🙂
We seriously need to replace windows. But I can’t really contemplate that when the night-time temps are in the single digits! Perhaps when it warms up…..
I have been wondering if one could get new windows without losing the interior trim….. Our trim around the windows matches the trim around the doors, and I would hate to lose it and have to start over (not to mention I do NOT want to paint all that trim….) How heartening to see your new windows with the old interior trim! (Our outside trim is nothing special; losing that is no big deal, in comparison.)
Hooray for improvements to our living situations!!! 🙂

I would be excited, too! Can’t wait to see your fresh new paint inside and out. White is perfect to showcase all your colorful things, and nothing is more fresh than white with whiter trim!

New windows are a good thing. I was amazed by how quietly my new windows moved in the track. The old aluminum ones were reluctant to move and felt gritty when slid open in the track. I live in the high desert so that may have been a factor, but these new ones still don’t make that gritty sound when opened, and it’s been almost 8 years since they were installed.
I can’t say the transition wasn’t chaotic though…glad you’re not having that experience.

Aah…your very own clear sight/clear vision. That has a meaning, doesn’t it? It’s at times like these that we wonder, “Why didn’t I do this before”? There is nothing like things that work smoothly and well. You so deserve this!

I’ve heard that eyes are the windows to the soul so maybe windows are the eyes to the soul of the house, and your house definitely has soul! And so does your blog! Congrats!

I feel so happy that you Love your beautiful new windows! Our home was built in the sixties and our old windows were aluminum. When the new windows, for our entire two story house were installed, the company brought a massive crew and they took out every window in the house, all at once, and put in all of the new windows and re trimmed the inside and put new trim on the outside of each one, in three hours!!! It was so scary and so exciting at the same time. It was fast and it was crazy. The end result is that I feel like a new woman every time I look at how nice they are, compared to what we had before. I count it as one of the top improvements that we have made to our home, in the 28 years we have been here and I can tell that you will enjoy your new windows just as much as we do!

I am happy dancin and spinnin in circles for you!!!! happy sunshine streaming in those windows and wee rain drops coming out to play. They look great Mary Ann. What would the world be like without windows to see out of, where would all the warm lamplight glow from a cozy room if not for a window to set itself free out of…talk windows all you want and really pleased for you that it was a gentle transition, rather than complete chaos and disruption… open and close em all ya want girl.

New windows is exciting, at least in my corner of the world it is. We installed new windows a few years ago, enjoyed all my windows clean at one time. Happy days, painting too, everything will be clean, nice feeling is t it. Keep on rolling open those babies, make sure they work. Enjoy

Congrats on the fab windows MAM. You will love “white walls and even whiter trim”.. I have off white, Magnolia, walls and pure white trim. My ceilings were a disappointment as the contractor used what he called ceiling paint and they grayed it down by adding a touch of black. i was devastated…i LOVE a very bright home and am enthralled by the light and shadows and the reflections that play on the walls and ceilings. …branches moving, birds flitting, and always new “windows” of light on various walls as the sun moves over my house. I am just looking for an excuse to repaint the ceilings.
Enjoy!
