i did this while facetiming with sister. i'll go back in and add some darks. i almost never have a wide enough range of values first go-round.
while i drew & colored garden roses, sister did the same with a bottle of seaglass.
i also drew a miniature venice scene in my miniature sketchbook.
if you're interested in watercolor journaling inspiration you can't go wrong with sigrun krafft on flickr…
she is positively masterful. go see for yourself!

Love all of your sketches, but that Venice scene was a sweet treat.

Ditto to all the above….ie. Love seeing your wc work and travel (and local) stories and following what you and Carol (and sometimes Pam ) are up to.
And thanks for the peek at Sigrun Krafft’s fine work.
For a wonderful ‘closer to home’ look at the view: check out Chandler O’Leary’s terrific blog of roadside attractions @ Drawn the Road Again.

I love your rose sketches. They are fabulous, even without adding some darks. I love that you and Carol skype and sketch/paint together. Such fun!
Did you look around at Sigrun Krafft’s other flickr albums? She has 9 of them! They are all wonderful. Go look at this one, with some cat sketches!

I love that little sketchbook. What size & brand is it?
The flowers you’re doing are so juicy & yummy.
Carol looks so serious! I don’t get that impression from reading her blog. I had her as one who laughs easily & likes to be carefree and have fun. Serious at work tho.

always adore your sketches Mary Ann and I also love that you are working across different sized journals which I think it pretty brilliant in learning how to scale and have things make sense to each other, your tiny Venice is totally adorable. When I sketch nothing is ever really very accurate, not that I think that matters…my world is much more like Alice’s trip down the rabbit hole, rarely does anything make sense but I manage just fine…so in that respect…my sketches are true to life…crazy and nonsensical as ever there was…xoxox

I find roses difficult to draw–I can’t keep my place on them–does that make sense? I carefully look at the rose, but when I look down at my paper and then back at the rose I have lost which petal I am on–maybe my roses have too many petals lol–any suggestions?

Your flower sketches grow (haha) better and better. More and more nuances of color and shade in every area.

You are always so inspiring! I’m leaving for Italy on Tuesday with my first stop in Venice. I LOVED “ticket to Venice” – so excited to go to the paper shop!
