this week i used a lead pencil & a charcoal pencil. i finished with watercolor.
6 sets of portraits down, 46 to go!
this weeks inspiration:
it's windy and cold here in LA, but sunny.
that's all.
oh. well there is my L.
hope you're bright eyed and bushy tailed in your corner of the world.
later!
Best one yet! That red lipstick made me squeal!!!
I had fun with pens and pencils drawing these 2 portraits..but HELP required now..as am wondering Paul who???
Im sure i should know so please excuse my ingnorance …but inquiring minds need to know these things especially when his face is staring back at me on my page.
Looking forward now to the next round of sketch wars for sure. 🙂
What a nice sketch of Joni Mitchell! was my first reaction. Maggie or Joni, I love it.
Very much enjoying the sketches – there is a wonderful sense in your drawing of what you ‘see’ not so much see right there, but what your impression is of what you see about the person – their quirkiness and personality. Courageous and well expressed, your drawings.
So i notice in the ‘great blog redecoration scheme’ that you have ‘shop’ on the top bar, where one can get the labels. (which you know I have) – this is making me most optimistic that you’ll be offering MORE things in that shop one day. I like it!
I just found the most wonderful book and I think you would enjoy it: The Collier Campbell Archive by Emma Shackleton.
This is the archive of a pair of sisters who made painted designs for fabric, many inspired by Matisse. It’s an amazingly huge book full of color prints of painted patterns. It reminded me of your latest visual journal.
You know that drawing can keep you from losing your mind when the rain is pouring into your kitchen through your light fixture? Well, keep that in mind should you ever be in that position. I think that I might draw the people that you and Carol draw, or invite MY sister to exchange subjects with me. My mental health is already improving just thinking about it. Now if the rain will just stop so they can get the new roof on.
Beautiful MAM. – glad to hear you are still relishing your freedom. Made your Meyer lemon marmalade the other day – such a shot of sunshine on a grey day. Thank you.
Hard to go wrong with Maggie Smith! The portraits are coming along well. A great project, it will be interesting to see how they’re looking several months from now.

donna – my sister and i each choose 1 portrait per week. i find them online – whatever strikes my fancy as im surfing through the week – she sends me hers and i send her mine. we draw both.
Wonderful portraits. I was wondering whether people posed for you, as I had not scrolled down at first glance… But then I saw your models and you captured them very well.
Well done you! The wars become you…
I love your sketches and your sisters! They are really great. what fun war you are having!
Oh how I love the gentleman! So distinguished!
love your portrait sketches.. so fun.. so you! Any way we can all play along with you… it would be so fun to play along and improve our skills too.????
figured no harm in asking….xox Deb
Bravo! What glamour!
You are getting very good at this sketching business Mary Ann, Very good. I do adore Maggie Smith. I was wondering whose faces were gonna appear on the screen. Utterly delightful and then some. Off to see what Carol has in store.
Ohhhhh… I love the young Maggie Smith portrait!! I need to try drawing again. My first roommate and I used to entertain ourselves nightly with drawing. Jackson Browne, Cat Stevens and Billy Joel kept us company 🙂
Am in India! Bright eyed, defs. Bushy tail dragging a bit this morning between my swollen ankles. Love the food, but the salt is killing me.
Your sketches are so fine. Maggie is divine. Sigh…I would love to take a sketching class with you.
Your sketches are great! I love the eyes on ghe gentleman….intense and full of something. Not sure just what, but something! The L rocks, too!
You know, I’m seeing marked improvement in your sketches! That’s how I taught myself….drew every day, working from photos. It’s such a joy, too!
