i’ve been dabbling in my handmade “smash” slash inspiration book which i haven’t touched since summer (!)
and also taping down some arrangements that please me in my visual journal. there’s a BIG 4-day weekend in a turkey costume looming ahead for the u.s.a. and i am taking my leisure studies seriously.
thank you for those awesome book recommendations! some i’ve read, some i’ve heard of, and plenty were brand-new-to-me books. i needed a quick fix so i started {and finished} DIVERGENT. it’s a sci-fi tween page-turner. sort of the girl with the dragon tatoo meets harry potter in a futuristic mad max-esque thunder dome. um. sort of.
now i’m starting emily, alone. i like what the washington post wrote about it, “addresses the undiscovered country of being a senior.” plus the huffington post said, “a book of quiet yet stunning beauty”. i’ll have 2 please. thank you.
i also downloaded plenty of your recommendations {samples} onto my kindle to try on for size. will report back with my findings!

Thanksgiving morning. I could not pass the day without saying how thankful I am that you write this blog – my 100% all time favorite. Got an I-Pad 2 weeks ago and have been so busy figuring it out I have yet to download books much less read one. Got stuck on Angry Birds for a whole day! ugh. Anyway. Love You.

Hello Mary Ann! I thought I had done all I needed to do before that ‘Big 4-day weekend’ but reading this I just realized I completely forgot to pick up a Turkey Costume. Oh well, maybe I’ll string a bunch of cranberries together and wear that instead…. Wishing you a wonderful Happy Thanksgiving Day. xxx Sharon

I have a couple more recommendations for you: Whistling Season by Ivan Doig and I second the rec for Out Stealing Horses. They are both books where the landscape is almost a character itself.

Love the journal pages. Your post title gave me an idea for another altered book, thank you.

You may also wish to try “The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie” by Alan Bradley, the first in a series of mystery novels with an 11 year old girl as the main character. Very entertaining and the author is Canadian, eh? 🙂

Oh! I loved “Emily Alone!” It’s not for everyone, but I have read it twice this year and was just sitting here thinking of pulling it from the shelf to take to bed and start again. If you like it, read “Wish You Were Here”, which is the prequel to this. But I liked “Emily Alone” better. I hope in my heart of hearts that Stewart O’Nan will give us one more Emily book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did Mary Ann!
