Brown Sugar is in the throes of a full scale bloomapalooza. When the flowers open they are russet colored.
But after a few days her petals fade to gold. A metallic hibiscus. A person couldn’t ask for more than that.
The piles continue to grow. The weather is getting chillier each day. Right now I have the heat on! Misty cloudy colored days here in the city of angels. Brrrrr…
MY SISTER’S been on a voyage of discovery in Taos. Go see for yourself. One more thing. One. More. Thing.
I’ve had my ticket since April. My sister will join me for a week!
Go on. Guess where? You can come if you want. The hats above are NOT required.
Chris says
We have this exact same hibiscus in our border right now, tinning itself!! er, tanning.. er, not the exact same…
okay, never mind.

cheryl says
Wow another trip ? how cool is that! I am jealous of the flower and that you have to turn on the heat. It’s literally up to 100o degrees where I am from.

If this is St. Petersburg, I recently read Kristin Hannah’s historical novel based on this old city. While a very somber read in many respects, the historical account of what this city has gone through was quite fascinating. But regardless of where you’ll be going, I know we’ll all enjoy traveling with you when you share your adventures!

I’m going for Budapest, which I hope it is. I LOVED it and dh and I want to go back sometime in early fall. We had a great Dec trip, tho no snow. 🙁

Sister!
What do you mean hats are not required? I already got us two so we will fit in among the locals. I got you one with a medal on it so people will know that you are in charge. I am also practicing key phrases that I think will come in handy. August will be here before you know it!
Elizabeth Freeman says
Mary Ann, your sister’s link did not work….. 🙁
Elizabeth Freeman says
Gotta be Russia, Moscow or St Petersburg..

I’ve just finished reading The Hare with Amber Eyes, the most thrilling book about a collection of netsuke which began in Paris and was moved to Vienna at the turn of the last century. I immediately thought the top picture was of old Vienna. Somehow the two pics don’t seem to go together. Just shows what I know (or don’t)!
Could the Russians be invading a town – are you teasing us?
Cynthia of Cynful Creations says
Okay, I’m excited for your next trip, Mary Ann, but that’s months away. In the meantime, all I see is a table full of FTB albums, yippee!! I thought Wyatt would look more excited but perhaps he’s all tuckered out from watching you craft up a storm for the past few weeks.
Lori Hudson says
I can grow hybiscus! Where did you buy such a beautful specimen?
Paula McNamee says
Hi Marianne, Budapest is your next adventure – sounds wonderful. It’s great to follow your travels in your blog posts, walking videos and journals. Thanks for sharing. FTB looks like a great class.

Prague

It definitely looks to me like the young men in the bottom pic are Red Army soldiers, probably from 1944 or 1945, close to the end of WWII. The reason I say that is b/c at that late stage in the war, the USSR was drafting teenage boys as young as 14 or 15 to make up for the large-scale losses of soldiers during the Nazi invasion. The boy on the far left looks as though he could be from the far eastern reaches of Russia, or from Kazakhstan or Uzbekhistan.
The “ES” letters hanging from the building in the background suggest to me that this is most likely Germany…in Russia you’d see the Cyrillic alphabet. Is it Berlin? Munich?
Saucy Chick Sherry says
I shall think this is Russia but not certain where. I was in Moscow up to St. Petersburg but not in snow. Where ever it is you will love your trip. Metallic hibiscus? Gorgeous!
Nancy says
I wish my sister could see the pictures. She would probably know exactly where it is in Russia. She has made many trips there doing work for the Children of Chernobyl.
Violet Cadburry says
Still have to sign up for the FTB class, I am trying to find a piece of plastic with magical monetary powers. Looks like Budapest. Can’t wait to start:)
Andrea says
Russian soldiers. War torn city. Berlin?
Janet says
It’s been cooler than normal up here in the high desert, too. But I don’t have any metallic blossoms to look at.
Somewhere in Russia? That’s what I think of when I see those hats. Moscow? Leningrad?
colleen darling says
Or maybe St. Petersburg or??
colleen darling says
Prague??
Dawn says
Oh, oh, I know where you are going, but I cheated so I won’t say and spoil the surprise. Can’t wait to travel vicariously with you.
