After school each day I squeal my tires on the way out of the parking lot.
I race home don my best play clothes and start playing. With the plants! Up to my elbows in potting soil. Old geraniums and succulents are being moved and transplanted. Oh the rich earthy, yet also supernatural colors of those succulents. I have always been a fan of blue & grey plants. Green is good too. But brown & yellow? Ravishing.
My epiphyllums are finally getting their own giant pots so they can mingle with each other. Epiphyllum soirées in the evening garden!
Soon they'll be forcing all humans and other more lowly plants to bow before them. Their magnificent blooms are staggering. It's all going to happen. Right here. In the back. No kidding.
Someone's giant litter box has turned into a full blown firehearth.
My front yard is in complete shambles, but WHO KAYRES?

I absolutely love succulents. They are the only plants I keep in my office… I have an Epiphyllum that I’ve had for 30 years! I got it on my first job at a nursery. Up until this past summer it had never bloomed… This past summer it bloomed 3 times and I MISSED EVERY ONE OF THEM! I’d get home from out of town and the blooms would be spent! Oh how I want to see it bloom!!!

I’m loving seeing the before-and-after-ness of these pictures. Just a teeny bit jealous but mostly just excited for you bringing your dream to reality.

Gorgeous! Your design is enchanting and I have total patio envy! Love the succulents, they are living sculptures that add a whole new element to a space. I don’t know if you have ever been to Quail Gardens in Encinitas, now San Diego Botanic Gardens, but they have the most interesting succulent plantings — check out the website. Don’t know what you plan for the slope but some huge variegated agaves would look spectacular and mimic the shape of the fire flames. I too have been in the garden this week…pulling weeds:(

Fantastic! It all looks so foreign and so hot to my northern eyes. Succulents wouldn’t stand a chance where we live. And even if they did, there are always the 1001 cats of our village.
Vision is what you have, Ms Moss.

unforeseen is an apt description susan. very unforeseen. im grateful beyond words that one little thing let to another and another. i would never have dreamed or imagined that my little labors of pure love would lead me here. everytime i look at my patio i have to pinch myself.

I think it extraordinary and a vivid testament to integrity that doing what you love can often lead to unforeseen successes. How very wonderful (not enough superlatives here) that this little blog lead to so many fans and friends then to one little class, then to another, then to the dream backyard, then to a swank tile litterbox.
Way cool beyond any of my words. Congratulations, Mary Ann Moss!

Mary Ann,
Your new patio and garden are awesome!! The design of your firebox looks like a rising sun, and all your succulents and potted plants will be perfect compliments to the smooth terra cotta and Mexican accent tiles. Can’t wait to see more.
