as the days lean in towards the new year, the vaporettos become more crowded. more people are bustling down the passages, going into the shops which glow brightly in the dim lanes. afternoons look like evening. the dark of winter is very much alive.
i have loved going out in the quiet lanes of dorsoduro in the morning, with its lapping canals and hidden gardens.
christmas has passed, but it is still in the air. and on the doors.
i have clambered over every bridge on this small rectangular island of ca’ rezzonico and followed each path to see where it leads.
our rental has been fantastic. every proper bibliophile will love it. there are so many books on venice and italy in general. gorgeous uncommon books you didn’t know existed and so many with arty covers.
too bad the internet only worked for about an hour a day on average and the washer not at all, but the charms of the apartment were great. i would stay here again.
yesterday was bitterly cold. by that i mean it was in the mid-30’s. we took a boat to burnano to see the brightly colored houses.
the streets look empty, and some were, but most were busy with after-christmas shoppers and tourists. we enjoyed it very much. especially our warm and delicious lunch with our attentive waiter.
throw your camera in the air and hit the remote shutter. you’re bound to get a good shot. i brought my nikon to venice and didn’t use it once. the iphone is just too convenient. here, as in nearly all of my posts lately the iphone is my go-to camera.
dottie and i roamed around san polo today taking in the ice skating rink in the main campo. it was our very last afternoon of wandering.
i checked in here around 2:30. i’ll tromp downstairs at 4:45 am and a cab will take me off to the airport. by 1:30 pm tomorrow (friday) i’ll be home in los angeles, but my heart will still be here on these watery canals.
right now i am perched over a canal with a window seat. it’s darker now then when i took this photo and golden lanterns are making the water shimmer.
my eyelids are growing heavier by the minute. time to sign off and fall fast asleep. hope you’re warm and content. your heart brimming over with good cheer and hope for the new year. may it be splendid in every way.
with love from venice…xo

I have loved following your trip to Venice. i have a question–many of your photos show houses with plants and flowers outside-yet you said it is in the 30’s there. It looks like the plants are thriving–how can this be?
Mary Ann Moss says
well i guess they are just varieties that can stand the cold…we saw plenty of succulents! i think the narrow passages provide a microclimate that the plants tolerate.

I loved the whole trip! but please, more details on what you ate! I’m thinking I’ll have to plan the next trip to Venice but not with an 0dark30 departure for the airport which for us east coast people is always Milan.

Watching you through flying snowflakes in Wisconsin. A stray kitten showed up at our door a few weeks ago. He has taken over all aspects of my being. Life is good. Be safe.

Thank you for taking us along on another faerie tale holiday. All your images are so dreamy – for a few minutes I’m right there strolling across a bridge – trying not to think about falling in the canal. Does anyone ever fall in?
