hello you crazy kids!
back in february i was contacted by the nice people at watercolor artist magazine. they asked if i’d be interested in having our annual art retreat featured in their ART ON THE ROAD issue – august 2018. i was thrilled to be asked and agreed right away. this issue is filled with inspiration and i’m honored to appear with all the other artists, especially brenda swenson! an artist i have long admired. she has an 8 page feature and it is fantastic. if you want to know where to find a copy of your own, it is HERE.
it was 112 in LA today and at 8:09 pm it’s cooled down to a blistering 103. i have been reduced to a puddle of lethargy, but am rousing myself now that our hot star has gone down over the horizon. in fact, i have settled comfortably down on an ice pad to tap out this missive to you. lows tonight will be 83. soon i’ll turn on the house fan i had installed some years ago. even with outdoor temps that high it does such a good job of moving that balmy air around the house and cooling all of us down.
our mild summer season is coming to an end as it always does this time of year and the HEAT begins. it’s not usually this hot though till august into early october. that’s when this part of the world sizzles. still, we are fortunate to mostly have cool nights.
If you live in california and love reading about climate and weather you may enjoy climate scientist daniel swain’s weather blog. i subscribe and enjoy his postings v.v. much.
waving to you across the vast interwebs. see you soon!

That’s dope, dog! As my 21 year old son would say. Congrats on your article. You could write a book you know, with spectacular illustrations. I have dusted off my watercolors and am trying to get back into some sort of art routine. Looked like you had fun in Germany and glad you didn’t get lost in the beer gardens. TTFN

Great article–congratulations! I’ll tell all my friends!

Just ordered a copy! I received watercolors for Christmas that I’ve yet to use, so perhaps this and the on-line class I signed up for this evening – Draw and See with Rebecca Sower – will help me get motivated. Thanks for the inspiration!

When I heard that Brenda Swenson and Cathy Johnson were featured in this issue I was thinking about getting a copy, but was too lazy to figure out how to get it in Germany. I had no idea that you were featured, too! Thanks for the link, ordering was easy. Now I have to wait for it to travel across the Atlantic, I hope I get it before our trip to Norway in late August!

How exciting, Mary Ann! I ended up getting a subscription from Amazon for a year. I used to get it and cancelled at some point. I will be getting that issue first, so YAY! Getting published is quite an honor.

How excellent, Mary Ann! Congrats! (I was going to say “how cool” but then thought maybe that wasn’t appropriate, given the weather…..)
Love your topic and your article, and, of course, your pics. (covering up naughty words with ribbons…. lol…….)
Good work. 🙂

Thank you for making it so easy to order a copy of the magazine. I can’t wait to have all those photos in my hands. AND Brenda Swenson, whose Pasadena/South Pasadena paintings capture my home towns so beautifully. I also subscribed to the weather blog you recommended. Yesterday was other-worldly. A friend reported that at Huntington Hospital it reached 119. All of which is secondary to the wonderful article about your annual retreats and the inspiration in which we get to share. What a fine start to a season of Staying In. As Conan has been known to say, Be cool, my babies.

Your article is fabuloso, Mary Ann! So sorry to know that you are suffering in the heat. I would be, too. I’ve been working on an acrylic canvas (almost finished), adding to art journals, and doing an abstract mosaic on glass. It’s good to keep arting!
