i'm copying postcards with watercolor. sharpening my skills before i begin my sketching intensives in stockholm, but really just fooling around.
also stopping here and there for some random car sketching…
let's discuss travel journals. i'll go first.
wait. let's discuss wallpaper instead. or how about wallpaper in travel journals.
the 4 top sheets of wallpaper below are all swedish. the black one, 2nd from left is a reproduction of an original josef frank design. how do i know? i'm on sabbatical! i have time to conduct wild-goose research!
once i realized that ingrid sent me these wallpapers and i confirmed that they were in fact swedish designs, it didn't take me long to hunt down josef frank. his designs are distinctive and it turns out i have a few of them.
although austrian, frank became one of sweden's most important designers when as he fled to sweden to escape the nazis. he began working at svenskt tenn, a legendary swedish design house in 1934. together he and svenskt tenn's founder estrid ericson would go on to form a lifelong partnership and make immense contributions to swedish modernism.
checkout this cool video about josef frank's wallpaper! i have a few of these designs, thanks to ingrid, and will be using them in my swedish travel journal.
since i'm a mindreader i know what you're thinking. who is this ingrid? so i swiped this photo of she & her husband from her blog HERE.
don't they look nice?
and i might add… she just emailed me and told me to bring rubber shoes for the rocks and relayed how good the salt water of the skagerack sea will be for me to swim nude in each morning. after all she does it! i will be bold. unabashed. confident as i stride into that sea with all my rotundness. surely my extra layer of padding will help with what i imagine is a very cold sea. don't picture that in your mind.
but do picture my swedish travel journal which i will be sharing forthwith.

I’ve had a folder of Josef Frank designs in my design files on computer for long time. I think I first was drawn to his word when I saw a large sofa in an Anhtropologie catalog. Yummy stuff
Look at at hose colors in the Swedish photo – no wonder the flag has the blue!
What a lovely time you will have.
However it is because of you that you will have the lovely time because you embrace it all.

Picture me,…ooohing and aahing over that wallpaper!!!
Not stopping this AM to watch the vid but I will, I promise.
And laughing out loud at the “rotundness”, which I share. HA!!!
The sea will bear us up , dear heart……Believe….and GO forth…..
Remember, should you encounter a riptide, swim parallel to the shore until it releases you.
Peace and hugs,
~sass
PS…Happy Sabbatical time…..

Will you make postcards of your neighborhood and LA to exchange with your friends in Sweden? I’m curious how you will use the wall paper in your journal.

A very specific comment, perhaps strange, because I do in fact love the whole of your blog. But today, I really love your bricks in the Kirby Street painting. Huzzah! And happy weekend, if such things mean anything on sabbatical 😉

Wild goose research! I love it and I love having a name for it! Spent a few hours doing it today. Also I LOVE skinny dipping although as I age I’m getting more particular about the temperature of the air I get to return to. Also – in order to enjoy the full sensation of a functioning body I air dry rather than wrap up in a towel or blankie. HAVE A GREAT TRIP – can’t wait to see the journal.

I do love your blog. Look forward to checking it every day. And what a fun idea: copying postcards. I have a collection and must pull them out to give it a try. Skinny dipping in the ocean: did it once at night during a grunion run (I was young and in good shape and it was dark 🙂 ) Try it, you’ll like it.
