our storm passed quickly and all that was left this morning were passing flotillas of clouds in deep blue sky. it stayed cool all day, even with the sunshine. i ♥ winters in california. but i do dream of blizzards. and ice skating. and sleds. and sleigh rides through the white countryside. and ice fishing. and snowy cabins.
and i did think those winter thoughts while i sliced up the meyer lemons i picked off the trees in palm springs a few weeks ago.
i worked away at the kitchen table in the sun. slice slice slice.
…sort of followed this recipe except i used 3 cups of water and 2 cups of sugar. i can't wait to spoon some onto my toast in the morning. it thickened nicely and was perfectly sweet and bitter.
i'm going to plant my dwarf meyer lemon tree in the front yard this week. it doesn't seem to like living in a pot. i'm hoping it will like its new home near the peach tree and give me lots of lemons to pick year after year when i'm in my dotage. i can have my assistant push me outside when i'm 95 and sit me under the lemon tree.
further thoughts about yellow.
and dots.
and stuff.
if someone were to call me on the phone and say, "i heard about your sabbatical what big important things are you doing with your time?" i would say without hesitation, "i'm making dots & dashes!"
because i am.

I have a new theme song for your sabbatical…dots and dashes by Silversun Pickups, who are also dispatched from La…or thereabouts! 🙂 Love the yellow theme!

95? Pshaw! Way too young to think someone else will be pushing the chair! More likely you’ll be telling your assistant to bring you the ladder!

Mary Ann, I passed your blog info. along to Elizabeth Duvivier who started the Squam Art Workshops which take place twice yearly on Squam Lake in NH as well as annually down south and last year in Italy! I thought you would be a wonderful teacher for them to know about, and she is going to check out your site. I hope that was ok to do. I am going for the first time this June; it’s a dream come true for me! You can check them out at squamartworkshops.com. Have a crafty day!

Wow, I’m sitting here now looking at a big bowl of lemons. I was going to use them for the “lemon, cayenne, and maple syrup cleanse”, but lemon marmalade sounds much better!

I like the new layout, yellow stripey edges are eye catching . Meyer lemons, mmmmm. I have just a little left from my batch from last winter. I should grab whatever Trader joe’s has left….

sounds great! I have been doing some “canning” and “preserving”, and this sounds like a real possibility. Questions: (1) the recipe doesn’t speak of removing the rind: is it all cooked together? (maybe I just missed that part). (2) why did you increase water when you cut sugar? Is this some secret that only members of the marmalade inner circle know??? (3) did you hot water bath your bottles? (4) aren’t you sorry you started this whole thing???? tee hee hee

I was just wondering what I was going to do with my lemons, and now I know !
Funny it doesn’t need pectin.
Last year I did limoncello, and I was thinking of maybe doing candied lemon rind in chocolate.
Thanks!

Making dots and dashes IS important work.

If you miss blizzards you should have taken a trip to New Hampshire. We got an official 28 inches of snow between Friday night and yesterday. UGH. I think your yellow lemons are so much more appealing. Hope the marmalade tastes delicious tomorrow morning.

Next time try lemon curd.

Let me know when you take sign ups for your assistant in charge of pushing you under the lemon tree. I’ll be 91, so your assistant may also need an assistant. But I’ll sign up.

Yellow! May very favorite color, the color of sunshine, lemons, my favorite sweatshirt hoodie, egg yolks, mustard…yellow just makes me smile. Happy, happy. Enjoy your dots and dashes…
we had a dwarf meyer lemon that loved living in the hard pan soil at the edge of the sidewalk in the back yard. That little thing produced the largest, sweetest lemons ever! The neighbors all shared in the bumper crop of fruit that little tree produced. You might have been keeping its roots too wet in a pot.

Tell’em about the Marmalade and Squiggles, too!
And the Tree-Nurturing.
And the Dreaming.
All big important things, really.

So…I hope you are planning to make a “lemon drop” with a little of that divine lemon juice. Mmmmm, my favorite cocktail and my favorite color. Your dots and dashes are dreamy…I’m floating in your color choices, so lovely!

Yellow lemons, dots and dashes, painted pages in a journal and yummy yellow treats; in various forms. It all looks divine from here, where it’s damp, and snizzling, “snow and rain having an identity crisis; can’t make up it’s mind what it wants to be, storm is pressing northward and should begin in earnest in the wee hours, tho we won’t have near the stuff that fell eastward. It sure is mighty pretty tho. Keep up the great dottin and dashin’ makes me smile and feel happy inside.
