downton abbey finale is tonight. i am desperately unhappy about this so in anticipation of our breakup i have launched unapologetically into the book above.
abe lincoln vampire hunter was about 50% too long. i was, however, finally gratified to know that my lifelong suspicions about abe's relationship with the undead were in fact spot on. i love it when i'm right about these things.
no one can convince me that it wasn't actually non-fiction. so don't try. DON'T.
THIS is what is waiting at the door of my reading lounge next. it's gotten rave reviews. and since rescue me ended it's the closest i'll get to denis in awhile.
anything new and good rumbling down your literary superhighway?

I’m currently reading Philip Roth’s Everyman (feeling mixed on it. love parts and must complain out loud about other bits even while eating lunch at Wahoo’s all by myself) and re-reading Percival Everett’s Erasure. I love this book, satirical, funny, and makes me think. I’ve enjoyed a few of his books now and look forward to reading more of them. I’ve not read the Good House but will look into it. When I’m missing Downton Abbey I find yet another fan fiction book for Pride and Prejudice. There are so many and even when they aren’t very good they fill the gap.

i have the third season on dvd and am waiting for just the right moment to begin it so i don’t have to stop…till it’s over and i can then re-watch it. i am picky about what i read…don’t want murder, no mayhem, no discord…just nice little english cottages, some rock walls and tea thrown in for good measure….yeah, i pretty much ready jane austen over and over….but i’m open to suggestions, something really really worth reading…please?

finished The Good House. So good. When you read the book, remember me; I lived in Lynn, I have family in Swampscott, I love Manchester and my parents owned a business in Marblehead. I am still trying to figure out what real town the fictional one is in the likeness of. These are my old stomping grounds. Made me so nostalgic.

I’m 850 pages into 982 pages of The Pillars of the Earth. I know the book has been around for many years, but I had commitment issues with such a long book- but it has been worth it, and I’ll miss those 12th century folks when I’m done.

Just read The Good House. All I says is make sure you have plenty of WINE on hand (in a good way). Just read in one day Ann Hood’s (The Knitting Circle), The Obituary Writer. Really sweet. On a completely unrelated art note – get ahold of Typography Sketchbooks” by Steve Heller

MAM, I’m on the waiting list for Ann Leary’s book at my library. Speaking of Rescue Me…….I just watched the entire series on DVD all the way through…..loved it…although The Job had some funnier moments….but now I feel like I know all those guys as real human beings, even though they’re just characters, and I miss them so much!

I have just finished a really beautiful novel called Astonishing Splashes of Colour by Claire Morrell

Lady Mary has the most deadpan reaction to everything. She was more fun when she was tootling with Mr. Farouk. Have you thought about starting a book club on line…such fun…

Season Four is now filming. Interview w Maggie Smith on 60 Minutes. I’m waiting until tomorrow to watch on PBS on computer – that way I can watch/stop at my own pace. I too came late to Downton (Have you seen Sesame Street’s “Upside Downton Abbey yet? – youtube)
Just return from movie “Lincoln” – powerful and moving. I now see why the best actor buzz is all on Day-Lewis.
Small consolation: just three months until series three of Sherlock on PBS. Also, new British Masterpiece series coming “Mr Selfridge” – re: American who established cornerstone British department store chain

Nothing but raves for The Good House from members of my online book club. It’s next up for me. I’ve just recvd:
To Marry an English Lord from Amazon, so that’s on the sideline…it’s a series of vignettes of American “new money” women who want the title/life style of the Lords of the Manor who have no money but have the mansions. This is non=fiction…
I’m amazed how quickly Downton Abbey reached the end of the season. But the 8 week season opened with two hour episodes & ends with the same…there is talk in UK about beginning the USA release of season 4 shortly after the UK version airs…due to the disappointment of Amer. fans who were alerted thru social media as to the ending of season 3. Hopefully, that will be the case so we don’t have to wait for nearly a year for season 4.

Maryann,
“The Good House” is a very good book – I loved it and can’t wait for her next one! It has already been optioned for a movie. Check out Ann Leary’s blog, too – I like her a lot – she’s smart, humble and a little sarcastic and funny and has horses and dogs.

This was a VERY quick season. :(. To read- Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan. He’s one of my favorites so like Downton, I want to see it/ read it but I don’t want it over!

Recently read and much enjoyed, the first 5 “Temeraire” novels by Naomi Novik. They are aimed at much younger readers than myself, but my excuse is that a friend gave them to me! Think Napoleonic wars with brave British heroes, sailing ships, cannon-fire – and talking dragons – yup they are the backbone of the airforce! Weird, wonderful and very entertaining, but they should have hired a proofreader.

Oooh, oooh, oooh, ‘The Good House’ is on my next-book-to-read also! Can’t wait to hear what you think. I’m grieving the end of ‘Downton Abbey’ already too–didn’t it just start?! No fair!

I am late to the Downton Abbey bandwagon and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning Friday watching the entire first season on Netflix. I’ve started through the second season, but am determined to take it a slower pace and savor it a bit! I’ll definitely be reading your book suggestion once I’m finished.
