I'm enveloped in a reading cocoon. I lift my head every now and then for a look at the sky, a drink of water, to pet a cat. Found a book on my shelves that my sister loaned me about 10 years ago. I've temporarily abandoned The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and taken up with reading diaries of women who traveled west on the Oregon Trail. Unputdownable.
Patio + stack of books = bliss. The facts.

LOVE your Kindle cover! Almost makes me want to buy a Kindle. But I love paper too much. How do you like your Kindle?

I was fairly sure you’d made that kindle cover youurself until I read the last line of this entry. However, even as I thought it, I was missing all those hanging threads and wild layers!
Lovely photos, as per.

I. LOVE. MY. KINDLE! I love it more everyday and now I must have a cover like yours. It doesn’t look like guerilla style sewing so I assume you purchased it. Who makes those!!? Sweet! I”m also reading Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest on Kindle. Meh. It’s not as good as the other two but I’ll finish it. I TRIED getting Elegance of the Hedgehog on Kindle after reading here that you liked it. Alas it is not available on Kindle but I did find a copy for $3 at my library’s used book sale! Yay! I was so happy I gave her $4!

I am going to read Girl who Kicked… next. Right now I am reading Little Bee. Amazing writing and story.
Wish we had sun here in No. Calif.
Enjoy!!

Mary Ann, I took your Remains of the Day online class and have been following your blog ever since. You are such an inspiration! Since you posted a picture of your Kindle, I assume you like it. I’ve been thinking of purchasing one, but if they could only make it a scratch-n-sniff so I wouldn’t have to give up the smell of books (both old and new), it would make my decision to purchase much easier! Since I’m an instant gratification kind of gal I’m sure I would like that aspect.

Ditto on the question of provenance of the Kindle cover. I remember reading “Womens’ Diaries of …” years ago then kicking myself after finding out too late that Lillian Schlissel was teaching at UNM (university here) and I missed it. I was just alerted to “These Is My Words : The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 : Arizona Territories : a novel” by Nancy E. Turner – the first of a trilogy in diary form. My friend says they too are unputdownable.
Please do tell us about the Kindle cover!

I have my great-grandmother’s journal recording her travels from one spot to another, not quite sure where she started but she ended up in Kansas, traveled in a covered wagon. All she wrote about was the washing, people whinging, and the fact she wasn’t married. Two years later she annotated it “still not married.” But she did get married and have a good couple rounds of sex as she had six kids…one of which was my grandmother. I am trying to copy all the originals so I can translate the writing and correct english into contemporary lingo.

I have a Kindle, also. Love it and have been looking at different ways to protect it. Did you make or buy your Kindle cover? It’s a very unique cover. Just found your blog and your journals are just amazing. My daughter is an artist and mentioned just a few days ago that she wants to start a journal. I told her about your blog and your beautiful and creative journals and to check it out to get ideas. Thanks for doing a blog. I enjoy reading about your travels and seeing your lovely Mom and sister. And your kitties, too!

Love, love, love your blog. I recently discovered it trolling for art journaling inspiration. I’m just beginning my exploration of altered books and visual journaling. Sooooo inspired by the abundance of good stuff on blogs, and your work in particular delights me. Anyway, your Kindle cover is fabulous. I too enjoyed “Women’s Diaries…” but an even more unputdownable read is “Letters of a Woman Homesteader”.
